Stabilize shaky, handheld video

Stabilize reads how far the camera moved from one frame to the next, then re-renders the picture to cancel the shake it found, cropping in a little to do it.

GPU

What it does

  • Three strengths: Light for a small wobble, Medium for ordinary handheld footage, Strong for walking, running or very shaky shots.
  • Crops in automatically by just enough to hide the correction, rather than leaving black borders at the edges.
  • The sound track is copied untouched.
  • Uses the graphics card to re-encode, when one is available.

What you can set

  • Strength: Light, Medium, or Strong.

Works with

Video (MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, WEBM, M4V, MPG, WMV and FLV).

Questions

Why does the picture look slightly zoomed in afterwards?

Cancelling the shake moves the frame around under the crop; a small, constant zoom is what keeps the moving edges from showing as black borders. Light keeps it to a minimum.

My footage is still shaky after running it.

Very large, fast movement -- running, a knock to the camera, a whip pan -- is a different problem from handheld wobble and does not correct the same way. Try Strong; for a clip that is still shaky, a shorter section around the worst part gives the analysis pass less to track.
