Add or remove a PDF's password

Password protect adds a password a PDF will not open without, or removes one that is already there. It uses real AES-256 encryption, the same strength a bank statement PDF is protected with, not a weaker cipher chosen because it needed no extra library.

What it does

  • Add: choose a password, and the PDF will not open in any reader without it.
  • Remove: enter the PDF's current password once, and every copy from then on opens freely.
  • AES-256 encryption -- not RC4, which most free tools quietly fall back to and which offers little real protection any more.
  • Nothing is uploaded to unlock or lock a file. Both directions run on your own computer.

What you can set

  • Password: add one, or remove one.
  • The password itself, typed once.

Works with

PDF.

Questions

I forgot the password. Can this recover it?

No. A password strong enough to be worth adding is also strong enough that nothing, including EYU SUITS, can guess it back. Keep it somewhere safe.

Does this stop someone printing or copying from the PDF, even with the password?

No -- this sets the password needed to open the file at all. Restricting printing or copying for someone who already has the password is a different, finer-grained kind of protection this tool does not set.
